Why?
August 25, 2009 by Shannon
It was bound to happen. Kellan’s new favorite phrase is no longer “what you doin’?” He has moved on to the great and formidable question of “WHY?”
I have to say, I didn’t really expect this one to go into heavy rotation until…I don’t know….at least preschool or something. Every question is “WHY?” followed up with a second, third and fourth “WHY?” Sometimes he gets crazy and mixes things up by saying, “Why, Mommy?”
And he does not give up until he gets an answer. Ignoring the question only makes him ask again. And again. And again.
Examples of the things Kellan is curious about:
- “Why he riding his bike?” (Random man on the street.)
- “Why she doin’ dat with her hands?” (Woman waving at another person.)
- “Why is Enzo outside?” (Even though Enzo goes out to do his “business” — like clockwork — every single morning.)
The thing is, he’s not truly curious about everything he’s asking about. Half the time, it’s just a knee jerk reaction to anything I say and he knows the answer perfectly well. Like when I ask him to get in his chair for dinner and a get an immediate “WHY?” Of course the obvious answer is: because it’s time for dinner.
I know, I know. I should just turn the question around on him in this instance. And I do. I often reply, “Well, what do you think the answer is?” That brings on his second favorite phrase:
“I… durnt… know.”
Sigh.
