Who’s hiding stuff around here?

Okay. This is getting ridiculous.
I am having a heck of a time finding things in my house. Last week, there were the disappearing chairs and kitchen sink. (They’ve all been rediscovered, thank goodness.) This week, I’ve had to solve the Mysterious Case of Disappearing Art Supplies. And there’s still one more case I haven’t closed — The Magical Disappearing Gift Card.
The latter mystery began Monday morning. I had just returned from a four day visit with my dearest friend and her kids with just one thing on the brain — buying Kellan a new guitar. Not just any guitar. (I know, I know….he’s already got two. But hear me out.) The one her boy has is toddler-sized with blue flames, and has several buttons and a whammy bar that make awesome rockin’ sounds. Plus, it has some sort of fancy technology that senses when you “strum” the imaginary strings. Super cool. My friend said she got hers at Toys ‘R Us, and I knew I had a $30 dollar gift card for that store that I still needed to use. Perfect.
Then I realized I had absolutely no idea where that card is. I thought it was clipped to the fridge somewhere, or stuffed in with a couple of restaurant gift cards we’re saving for “date night.” Nope. I searched the computer armoire, which would also be an ideal hiding spot for a sneaky little gift card. Not there either.
After about an hour of searching, I had to give up. Kellan wasn’t too pleased about all the time I was spending on the hunt. So we went about our day.
Later, when I decided to get him going on a little art project, the Mysterious Case of Disappearing Art Supplies presented itself, to my complete befuddlement. Two mysteries in the span of a couple hours??? I had just purchased some washable markers and paints, and could not locate them in the usual places — on the kitchen counter, in the art drawer, in the laundry room (where I often toss purchases as I come in the door) or even in the backup art bin I have in a back closet. Luckily, after I checked the art bin, I stood and stared into the closet in despair. Slowly, my eyes focused on a grocery bag, shoved into the corner with all my neglected knitting supplies. I snatched the bag and whipped it open — woo hoo! Mystery solved! But how or why that bag ended up there, I’m still not sure.
I’m starting to think someone is sneaking in here and moving stuff around on me. Maybe I should go looking around at Toys ‘R Us for guilty-looking gift card users.

Oh yes… the Mysterious Case of Disappearing things happens all too frequently in our home, too. This morning I could not leave for work before hunting down one very specific turquoise marker and a container of wall plaster for my oldest son. Otherwise, a huge tantrum would have ensued. (Can I say ensued?)
Things do tend to disappear when there are little fingers in the house. I still can’t find my sanity. I left it sitting right between a stack of bedtime readable books and a play sink full of pretend dirty dishes about two years ago and haven’t seen it since. It’s not in the laundry hamper, the toy box, or even under the kitchen sink. I might just have to break down and buy a new one on ebay.
Anyone seen my bike helmet?
Here’s my question…when you found the art supplies in with the knitting supplies, did you sit down and knit while Kellan colored? ; )
Try the freezer. My 2 1/2 year old is suddenly into putting things in the freezer (anything and everything in fact). Often times we will be on the hunt for something that has suddenly gone missing and Nolan will march over to the freezer and move the frozen peas aside to find the missing item. He is always fascinated with how cold the object has become and very proud that he was able to solve the mystery!
