What happens when an anchor-turned-SAHM sees old work friends
November 11, 2009 by Shannon
I sure miss my work friends.
A bunch of us got together recently and had a total BLAST. It reminded me that I was so lucky to work with such great people — they’re funny, fun AND talented.
Our little meetup also reminded me of something else — I am sooooo out of the loop. But not just because there are all kinds of happenings I’m not privy to anymore. Stay-at-home momhood has apparently sharpened my talent for blurting out useless drivel. I’m not sure if it’s because I talk to a preschooler all day long, or if it’s because I don’t get out much. Maybe both. Anyway, here’s a sample:
- When one of my friends pointed out a person with low riding pants (and the inch or two of butt crack those pants revealed), I shared that I’ve been surprised to see how much mommy butt crack is visible in the children’s area of the library. I think I followed that comment up with something like, “You know, because they lean over to help kids pick out books, or sit cross-legged on the floor…” As if such an explanation somehow makes my ridiculous observation more interesting.
- I also told them I spotted one of our mutual acquaintances in the grocery store parking lot last week, but was too busy schlepping bags and the kiddo into the car to run over to say hi. Wow. Interesting stuff, huh?
I know. I am a sparkling conversationalist.
And perhaps worst of all, I broke out a college-era dance move. (Note: The picture at left is not the move I’m talking about — it’s fairly benign. I believe this photo was taken well before the fancy dancing began. But you can see I mean business, because I have collected my hair into a ponytail.)
Okay, so you’re wondering what this dance move entails, right? This is so embarrassing, I can’t even believe I’m mentioning it. Well, too late. Here goes. I did the pelvic thrust. Yeah, it’s exactly what you imagine. One foot forward, one foot back, then you just rock the pelvis with the beat of the music. And when you really want to thrill the crowd, you do one giant leaping thrust which involves both feet coming off the ground. Yep, I did that move too. Several times.
So here’s what I’ve surmised from our little get-together. They’re all still funny, fun and talented. Me, on the other hand? My funny stories involve grocery stores and the library, and any fun or talent I have to contribute comes in the form of bizarre/random dance moves.
Yep, I definitely don’t get out much these days.

You and me both cuz! At least you got out. I think about going out and dancing…………in my mind. I’ve finally found a mom friend in my neighborhood though so hopefully after all the holiday craziness dies down she and I can go out and do something. Unfortunately at this point I have no idea what that something should be. Any advice??
