The secret is out!
January 14, 2010 by Shannon
I am SO RELIEVED. I feel like a huge weight is off my shoulders. I think I’m pretty good at keeping secrets, but I am TERRIBLE at keeping my own. When people have asked me how I’m doing lately, I’ve been biting my tongue to keep from blurting out, “I’m tired! I’m pregnant! I would really like a glass of wine, but I am tired and pregnant!”
And I have decided that the holidays are the absolute worst time to be in your first trimester. Here’s why:
- There are a zillion holiday parties and activities. First, you have to overcome your tiredness and make yourself look festive and presentable. Second, everyone offers you alcoholic drinks at these events. Third, it is really, really hard not to raise eyebrows when people notice you’re drinking just water, or some bubbly-looking concoction (cranberry juice and sparking water with lime was my go-to beverage) in a very tall and skinny glass. Heck, the bartender might as well put a big sign on such drinks that says: THIS DRINK IS VIRGIN AND SHE IS TRYING TO FOOL YOU. GO AHEAD AND ASK HER WHAT SHE’S DRINKING AND WATCH HER SQUIRM.
- All the extra holiday to-do’s — shopping, wrapping, baking, cooking — seem insurmountable. It’s hard enough keeping yourself well-fed and rested when you’re 8 weeks pregnant with a nearly 3 year old running around. Plus, I had a frazzled pregnancy brain to contend with. I shopped so inefficiently and irrationally that I ended up having to visit Macy’s five times in a span of about 3 days.
- If you’re not careful, sugar becomes one of the major food groups. Sugar is obviously not the most nourishing food for a growing fetus. But during the holidays, when you’re pregnant, starving and too tired to open a package of string cheese, it’s all too easy to grab a cookie or piece of chocolate.
So you see why I am so happy that I can now be open about this pregnancy — and all the ups and downs that go with it — AND the fact that Christmas is over! Hooray! No more secrets, no more cookies (although I still have some tasty chocolate truffles left) and no more baking/shopping/wrapping. Now. If I could just get an eeensy weensy bit of energy back to work with…

Congratulations, OFFICIALLY! We’re very, very excited for all of you and we’ll be through our first few months of x2 chaos by the time yours arrives, so hopefully we can support each other a little?
SO excited for you and can’t wait to meet the new little one.
Hmmm. Will you have to hold official “drumming hours” and band practice time?
Hey, I just popped back here after a Christmas break only to discover that you’ve let loose an amazing and huge secret whilst I wasn’t looking!
That’s absolutely wonderful. Hope post-Christmas pregnancy is proving cookie-less!
