The not-so-bright side of having a new baby
October 3, 2010 by Shannon
I had forgotten how much I LUUUVE cuddling a baby. Is it not the best thing ever? The quiet moments…the smiles….the cooing…..that heavenly baby smell…..AAAAHHH. I am just soaking up every delicious moment. They more than make up for all the other, um, not-so-blissful aspects of having a newborn around.
Nope – this post is not going to be all unicorns and rainbows, I assure you.

- Laundry, laundry, laundry. Between the diaper blowouts and spit-up incidents, I’m doing waaaay more laundry than I did pre-baby. Um, okay. I can’t blame it all on the baby. I’m not back in my regular clothes yet, so my clothing options are limited. And that means….way more laundry.
- The sleep fake-out. Ella’s a pro at this one. I rock her, and rock her, and rock her until my back muscles start to spasm. And just when I’m positive she’s totally asleep – BOINK! Her eyes pop open and she’s wide awake. Which means more even rocking for mommy.
- Spit-up, poo and pee – all at the same time. I recently got covered in all three within about 30 minutes of waking up for the day. There was a major poop blowout of the spraying variety, a pee-soaked nightgown, and a gigantic spit-up incident that coated my neck and chest. (This is what leads to so much of #1.)
- Screaming. In Stereo. I’m learning firsthand that when you have two children, they like to cry in tandem. Why is that, exactly? It’s really tough on the old eardrums.
But even with the screaming, laundry, sleepless nights and bodily fluid leaks, I would not change a thing. I am head-over-heels in love with my little Ella. She can poop and pee on me all she wants.

Nodding my head to all of those points!!!! But same here, I’m loving every minute with my Charlotte! Those little smiles and coos make it all worth it. Ella is a doll.
Yes, despite all those things… the screaming… oh, my God, sometimes I want to CRY - and the lack of sleep in the early days and the poo and pee and spit-up… it’s all so very worth it. And the baby stage goes away so quickly. ENJOY IT ALL!
Oh, lord, the LAUNDRY…. it slows down a little when they’re out of the newborn stage, but not much.
I recently realized I’m physically incapable of holding my youngest son without constantly smooching him. Lucky for me, he doesn’t mind…yet.
My daughter did pretty well dealing with her baby brother’s crying for a while, then one morning she just couldn’t take it anymore, apparently. He was in his crib, screaming, and she walked right over to him and started screaming back. Yeah, that was fun.
Enjoy the good moments! Nothing better than baby cuddles!
Clearly I need to stock up on laundry detergent. Good tip. See…totally full of good tips! And it’s a good thing Ella is so darn cute!!!
