I feel the need…the need for needles
October 8, 2009 by Shannon
Did I ever tell you that I used to be a knitting fanatic? Oh, I was a knitting fiend. I picked it up around the same time one of my best friends and fellow co-workers was learning to knit, and we used to spend all our dinner breaks watching American Idol and knitting our little fingers off. Then she moved to Seattle. Even though I lost my newsroom knitting partner, I kept up my habit. I made scarves, I felted cute handbags. Then I got pregnant. I knitted a giant basketweave blanket in navy blue for my baby boy, brought Kellan into the world, and then the needles started to gather dust. At that time, sleeping was infinitely more important to me than knitting.
Now, I feel the need for needles once again. I find it so odd that a week ago I was desperately clinging on to summer, and now all I can think about is hot chocolate, sweaters and yarn. The best part? I have discovered new joy in old, unfinished projects! This is a huge revelation. These old projects used to put me in a cold sweat. Just thinking about them…remembering them sitting undone in my closet…made me feel like a complete and utter knitting failure.

But I am BACK.
Guess what I did with a half-done poncho? I made a sweater out of it.
Guess what I did with an almost completed bag? I bound it off and I’m going to felt it this weekend.
AND…I am knitting a lovely striped washcloth. Just because.
(Note: A big thank you to my friends Megan, Heather and Lindsay. All of you, in your own way, have helped inspire me to dust off the knitting needles. Thank you!)

My wife likes to crochet while watching TV. She makes hats for Operation School Bell and donates them to be delivered to needy children.
I’ll put up with her watching the Hallmark Channel when its for a good cause like that.

Way to go, Shannon! There’s nothing more liberating than picking up those needles. Now we have to have a hot cocoa, knitting play date for sure! It’s that time…
I want in on that knitting date with you and Heather! I love that you’re knitting again and I LOVE what you did with your poncho! So cute and flattering! I do miss our knitting/American Idol dinner dates. I haven’t watched AI since….Lets knit together soon! I’ll be in Boise for Thanksgiving!
One of these days I’ll have to get you to teach me. My mom tried to get me into it years ago, but it just didn’t stick. I ended up doing a lot of cross-stitch instead.
