The Mommy Bag
September 1, 2009 by Shannon
I used to think walking around with a purse and a giant diaper bag was awkward. But I put up with it during Kellan’s newborn days, because I quickly learned that not having diaper cream or receiving blankets or teething gel with you when you needed it was a far worse fate than hauling the contents of the drugstore baby aisle all over town.
Well, now I’m in some kind of in-between purse and diaper bag hell. My purse has become the mommy bag.
A diaper bag is just too big and unwieldy to haul around anymore. (Although I do still keep it in the car, just in case.) But I still can’t go traipsing around town without diapers, diaper cream, snacks and sippy cups. So where does all that toddler gear go? In the mommy bag.
Here’s the worst part — when I have to clear all the kid stuff out of my bag and forget to return it. I purse-purged before my anniversary date with Michael two weeks ago, but haven’t put it all back in. I have the coloring book, crayons and travel bib in there — but what possessed me to put that stuff back in and not DIAPERS?!?! (I’ll tell you later about how that dumb move came back to bite me.)
Thank goodness big bags are “in” these days. Still, I don’t think it’s super hip to have Huggies popping out the top of a cute big bag. Such is my lot in life. At least until this potty training thing actually takes.

Yes, I know! Everyday at work, I find at least a few things that belong to my children in my purse! Snacks, a soother, a sippy cup… but hey, if the bag looks good? That’s all that matters, right?
My bags are always HUGE. I emptied my latest bag out just before my trip and its contents made me laugh - the only things in there that was actually mine were my wallet, sunglasses and phone. The other things? Diapers, wipes, crayons, granola bars, stuffed cat, spiderman, lego pieces, a couple of cars, stickers, socks and some drawings the little man had drawn.
Contents of my purse currently:
Phone
Wallet
Lipstick/ chap stick
Handkerchief
Two (2) sizes of pampers
Package of baby wipes
Die cast school bus
Plastic cow
Sippy cup- may or may not contain something rancid
Broken die cast taxi
Plastic king figurine (AKA the guy)
several brands of diaper coupons
Cheerio powder ground into the bottom
Nice.
Ha ha! That is great. I completely understand what you are talking about. This past week I have been contemplating the necessety of a purse and bag combo. Originally I was just doing the bag and adding my stuff to the front pocket, but then I realized how much of a pain it is to dig for my phone or lip gloss, etc… now I am toting both around… errr…
And I thought my bag was big and crammed with stuff! At least your stuff is useful (say..to help your kid). Today I pulled out three different notepads of various size and colors and three things of pocket kleenex packets (not to mention lots of old recipts). Clearly, the bag of a journalist. A journalist with lots of allergies. That’s me.
