Talkin’ teeth
April 29, 2010 by Shannon
We had a really great parent/teacher conference this week with Kellan’s two preschool teachers. It’s nice to hear that some of the things that may drive you crazy as a parent are actually great developmental milestones. So in the spirit of encouraging Kellan’s developmental advances, I am trying to exercise a little more patience with his millions upon millions of questions.
But there’s one set of inquiries that still leave me scratching my head. The teeth questions.
For some reason, this kid is obsessed with the thought that someday he will lose his baby teeth. He doesn’t seem concerned about his big teeth growing in. And he’s not too excited by the notion that the Tooth Fairy will leave him something under his pillow. He’s just completely obsessive about when and how his teeth will finally detach from his gums. And every once in a while, I find myself assaulted with questions/comments on the topic:
“Will I need help getting my teeth out, or will they just fall out on their own?”
“When I grow up, I want my teeth to fall out. I really, really do.”
“My teeth didn’t fall out today, by the way. They’re still stuck in my mouth.”
“Mommy, look! That tree is curvy. Why is that tree curvy? Will that tree fall down? When it does, will I be all grown up? I think I’ll be all grown up when my teeth fall out.”
I don’t have the heart to tell him that when he’s an old man, he’ll probably lose teeth then too. Hoo boy, would I get questions about that.

Oh, Shannon! That is priceless! So glad you’ve written all that down. HILARIOUS!
Ok, that is adorable!! You know, I have had bad dreams (as an adult) of my teeth becoming very loose, then falling out. I read somewhere that it has something to do with feeling out of control. It is a scary thought, don’t you think? Sounds like he’s very positive about it, so that’s good! And yes, aren’t you so glad you are writing all this cute stuff down!
Hey Shannon, speaking of writing all the cute stuff down, can you recommend a good hosted blog site? I really want to start keeping just a personal family one, and am trying to decide on a good one. I would like to post lots of photos and videos, and use it like a memory site. Any suggestions? Thanks! Shelly
Hey Shelly! Yeah, I’d use Blogger. I have a (very neglected) family website there, and I find it very easy to use. You can also very easily hide it from Google, so your family blog doesn’t end up showing in any Google searches.
