Stop right there, Summer!
July 16, 2009 by Shannon
Wait just a darn second. What’s going on here? Could it be that we’re already halfway through the summer?
Yep, I checked the calendar. June is history. July is halfway over. August is not far away.
On top of this somewhat sad seasonal milestone, next week will mark my two-month anniversary of stay-at-home momhood. Where is the time going? I really, truly thought that leaving work would allow me to slow down. Don’t get me wrong — we’re all having a blast and enjoying the freedom my new schedule affords. But time keeps marching on, nudging us through the lazy days of summer, until before we know it we’ll be pulling on sweaters to ward off the chill.
Let this be a lesson to me to:
- Eat more ice cream.
- Stop opening the laptop and sitting on the couch after Kellan’s in bed. I should be on the patio with a glass of wine. Even on weeknights.
- Start putting Kellan in his swimsuit a little more often, even if it’s just to run through the sprinkler.
- Start wearing my swimsuit a little more often, even if it just reminds me that I’ll never get my pre-baby body back entirely. Especially if I keep consuming wine and ice cream.
- Eat more ice cream.
Is summer slipping away from you too, or are you grabbing it and not letting go?

Summer has been horrible this year, weather-wise. We have had so much rain, it feels like I live in London, only not with the great shopping. We have taken advantage of every hot and sunny day, though - we have gone swimming more this year then last year, so that’s good! But still, it’s going by too fast - I can’t believe there are only 2 weeks left in July! I am getting depressed just thinking about our very LOOOOONG winter that is right around the corner. Nothing fun about that. I hate winter, cold, snow. I so live in the wrong city!
I think I need an extra summer to help me recoup from this summer. It has gone by at warp speed. And they say that the speed of sound and speed of light are fast, HA! Try the speed of summer.
I know what you mean, Loukia. We had a really cold and rainy spring too, which is fairly unusual where I live. So it feels like we got shorted out of a full summer season!
And I agree with you, Sadie! The speed of summer is light years faster than any other phenomenon in the universe!!!
Equate this summer to life. Where has it gone? And so quickly! I’m depressed.
Oh my goodness! I agree. Especially as a teacher…my vacation from the day to day whirl of teaching is truly slipping away. And it is more painful this year when I look to the school year that approaches, it begins after labor day (nice) and goes until June 25, 2010 (YIKES). Great post! -Sara (Megan’s Friend)
I had the same thought the other day - where has summer gone! I’m going to take your advice and sit out on the patio with a glass of wine more often! Our internet at home still isn’t work (GRRR!!!) so that’s not as much of a time suck as it used to be, which is a good thing. I like the idea of running through the sprinklers…. you and Kellan should give it a go!
