Oh baby! This is getting nuts…

July 29, 2010 by Shannon

I’ve spent the last several days hoping for some progress on the baby front. I got checked on Wednesday, and started to show signs of early labor within a couple hours! Yay! Right?

Wrong.

Suddenly, we got some information that led us to believe we might need to switch insurance plans. So we started crunching the numbers and comparing benefits while I winced and timed contractions. We had to decide whether to change to a plan that might save us a bunch of money, and make that decision in about 36 hours. However, switching would cost us BIG TIME if the baby were born before August 1. No pressure, right?

And that’s not all, folks! Take a look at the other drama we’re dealing with:

  • We could be signing closing papers on our house (yay!) any day now.
  • My brother and his family (including my 6 week old niece and 4 year old twin nephews) just announced that they’re moving away. In like, four days.
  • A family of five raccoons have taken to burrowing (and, um, defecating) under our front porch.
  • Our dog has developed a swollen, bloody cyst under his left eye.

So in between the many calls we’re making to our doctor’s office and labor/delivery nurses, we’re squeezing in a critter catcher appointment and an emergency vet appointment for the dog. Oh, and I’m scheduled to be induced first thing Tuesday morning if this baby doesn’t show up in the meantime. I really don’t want to do another induction. And my brother may not even be in town for the birth of my baby! Not to mention the fact that our kids will grow up six hours apart from each other…boo hoo!!!!!

Meanwhile, with the insurance dilemma, we’ve been faced with this question: should I go on bed rest for three days? Or do we stay with the plan we’re on and do everything we can to get this baby out?

Decisions….decisions….

Ultimately, we decided not to take the insurance risk and we’re sticking with the old plan. Which means we don’t have to keep the kiddo in there until August 1.

So what do you want to bet that she gets comfy in there until we force her out with Pitocin next week? That would be just our luck.

Oh my lord, Shannon!! You’ve got the makings of a sitcom there! Or maybe a Lifetime movie? That stinks about your brother. :( Boy, will you have stories to tell this baby when she finally arrives, huh? I’m telling you, now that you’re scheduled for Tues., she’ll arrive before then I bet. There’s just something about a deadline…

Holy Moly Shannon! The thing about all of this craziness is that you’ll put it off as gracefully as usual! The best part of all of the stress and uncertainty is that you’ll have beautiful baby girl any day now… I’ll be thinking of you and your excitement this weekend while slurping down kalimotxos on the Basque Block! xoxox

Shannon. You already know what a blessing it is to have a child. Do you ever get teary eyed thinking about who was around when he was born? The answer I’m looking for here is No. :) Stay focused on the really important stuff, which is that new baby and the fact that he/she is about to be welcomed into a happy, loving home complete with two great parents. Nothing else really means anything. Call the real estate folks and say, “Listen, I may not be able to make that appointment for signing those damn papers cause I’m kinda busy having a baby right now. I’ll get back to ya real soon.” :) The critter catcher will do what critter catchers do… and even the dog will survive whether he gets to a vet in the next 24 hours or in a week. In a few weeks, it will all be hilariously funny story material. Bless you and your family. Life is good.

Abby: I know, can you believe it?!?! A dear friend of mine said the same thing when I told her about all of this today…she thinks we’ve got plenty of material for the first three episodes of a reality show! :-)

Leigh Ann: You’re sweet. Slurp down a few of those kalimotxos for me, okay?

Ron: Thanks for the good wishes. Fortunately, our realtor is a dear family friend who says she’s made trips to labor and delivery departments before… ;-)

I’d agree, you’ve got enough material there for a full-season sitcom! I totally sympathize with your being overdue, I went 10 days over and finally surrendered to induction with baby#2, it all works out in the end!

Good luck on it all, the house, the dog and the new baby!
