My weight loss miracle
September 3, 2009 by Shannon

Let’s get one thing straight, right off the bat. I hate exercise. Always have, always will. I would MUCH rather spend my spare time doing sedentary activities — reading, knitting, writing or cooking. Cooking really isn’t sedentary, but you know. It isn’t exactly a good way to burn calories either.
So imagine my utter amazement and astonishment when I realized I could lose weight by sitting around 3-5 times a day — doing NOTHING — for anywhere from 20 to 40 minutes at a time. I was delighted! Some of my clothing was suddenly too big! People around me told me I looked good! I felt good! Then, my weight loss plan came to a screeching halt.
I weaned my baby.
Yes, I can attribute 100% of my miraculous weight loss to breastfeeding and breastfeeding alone. That year of my life was the one and only time that I’ve been able to lose a significant amount of weight. And I did it by just sitting around. Now that’s my kind of weight loss plan.
So here I am, a year and a half post weaning, and the weight has come back on. If only I could get the milk flowing again — that would do the trick. Instead, here’s where I’m at on the weight loss continuum:
- I am beginning to realize that yes, in fact, my clothes are getting tighter and it’s not because I shrunk them in the wash.
- I think it would be wise to cut calories by taking in fewer beverage calories. However, coffee, wine and water are the only things I really drink. And I love coffee and wine too much to give them up. I waited about two years to indulge in those beverages again! Hey, I earned my mugs of mocha and glasses of cabernet. Right?
- I don’t have room in my house for an exercise machine. I don’t want to buy an exercise machine anyway. So I should run or walk or something.
- I don’t like to run.
- Walking is okay.
- It’s about to get cold outside.
- I should stop complaining and get my lazy butt out of this chair.

Having been down the lactation/weight lane before, I am also dreading what not nursing will do to my closet! I am getting closer and closer as “S” is rounding out her first year- the longest I have ever nursed! I will be right where you are at in a few months. Thank goodness for hockey season! BTW, I got the feed issue resolved! Love the site my witty friend!
Very lucky! I nursed 4 children (at four different times) and I held on to EVERY pound until AFTER I quit nursing…
Unfortunately, I had to MOVE to lose a single pound. I have had friends that lost the weight while nursing, too!
Oh man, can I ever relate. I keep thinking there has GOT to be SOME sort of tolerable exercise. I’m thinking of tap dancing. Seriously.
Isn’t it crazy how weight issues vary from mom to mom? I count myself lucky that breastfeeding worked for me. Because I look at the pictures of myself before the weight loss started to happen, and YIKES. Scary.
Alisha, if you attempt the tap dancing (which I think is a fabulous idea, by the way) I expect a full report on the tolerability level — I just may join you!

I hate exercise too and I don’t think anything will ever change that, whether it helps me lose weight or not. It STILL SUCKS and ALWAYS will.
I love your writing! Fantastic!
And, I also love mochas. Just less frequently now! I guess from now on it’s kneading that pizza by hand?
I say keep running after that little cutie Kellan and you should be good!
