My little secret
May 15, 2009 by Shannon
Everyone’s got at least one, right? My private little addiction just so happens to be magazine hoarding.
They’re just so delicious when they’re brand new….the pages are crisp and the ink scent is simply intoxicating. Ahhh…. Maybe that’s why I just can’t seem to let them leave my life once they’ve made a glorious entrance into my mailbox.
Imagine what it was like when I was newly engaged and facing whole racks of magazines packed with photos of bridal gowns, cakes and flowers. I joked about my addiction then, but like any true addict I never let my friends and family know about the full extent of the problem.
The truth is, I never met a bridal magazine I didn’t like. And it wasn’t until last year — six years after my wedding day — that I finally allowed my husband to throw the 20 pound box out. I’m pretty sure I cried a little.
Now that I’m a mom? I had four — yes, four — subscriptions to parenting magazines rolling in each month. What did I do with them? Pored over them while breastfeeding my son, then saved them. Saved them in the computer room. In the living room. In a basket of blankets. On my nightstand. Under my nightstand. Under the bed.
And oh yes, they’re still there. I learned my lesson with the Great Bridal Magazine Toss-Out of 2008. Never keep them all in one place.

I am trying to overcome my subscription addiction too. Subscription rates have been so attractive over recent years that I just could not say NO to great deal! Problem was they came too fast and I could not keep up with them. For example, I am down from 6 travel mags to only 2 now and I continue to not renew certain publications (I was at about 20 subscriptions so this will take some time).
I hate to throw out magazines so (for a while) I took them to work and threw them on a counter for anyone to take home to read and I encouraged others to bring in their mags too. Interest diminished so I stopped . . . was it because everyone is too busy to read these days or my taste in mags sucks? Anyway I encourage all to talk to friends and neighbors about maqazine exchanges. Seems silly to me to be subscribing to the same mag as my neighbor when we can trade every week or two. If you’re doing this someone should change subscriptions and then trade magx when you’re done reading them. Try it– saves money, you’ll get to read more, and it reduces the guilt feeling of wasting an issue after only one reading.
Yes, you have a hording problem!

Guess what? Here is a solution… http://perfecttransitions.com/blog/sister_mary_clarity/paper_survival_tips_1_emotions
