Mission: Diaper Dare

September 2, 2009 by Shannon

Mission: Diaper DareYou know my little problem with forgetting to put diapers in my purse? Yeah, that little lapse in mommy consciousness nearly came back to bite me during a recent getaway.

I packed up just enough diapers. Just enough. I think my reasoning was that I’ve overdone it on the diaper supply in the past, and I figured I had at least one spare in the car and three spares in my purse just in case.

Well, there were no spares. Not in the car, not in my purse. And I did not realize our diaper supply was so low until the last 24 hours of our trip. What would most reasonable mothers do? Drive to the nearest grocery store and pick up a small package of diapers to insure against a diaper disaster. What did I do? Nothing.

Well, I guess I can’t say nothing. I calculated Kellan’s rate of diaper use in my head. I estimated how many he would need for the next 24 hours, based on how many poops he had churned out in the prior couple of days. And according to my calculations, he would have exactly enough diapers if we were home by 3 p.m. the following day.

And I figured if things got really bad, we could put him in one of the 10 swim diapers I had packed. (Another example of how I overpack some things, but totally underpack others.) Swim diapers are certainly no fun to change when they’re poopy, but I figured they’re better than nothing. And um….I saved a kinda used diaper. I know! Gross, right? But he wore it for less than an hour and there was nothing in it. Well, maybe a little pee. But not much.

Guess what — we made it! No partly-peed in or swim diapers necessary. We coasted into town around 2:20 p.m. (had hoped to be back by 2 p.m., but Enzo made a break for it at a gas station and nearly killed himself on the highway, not to mention the construction zone holdups) on our very last diaper.

Mission: Diaper Dare — accomplished.

A very interesting blog post. What would you say was the most common problem?
