It’s a girl!
March 5, 2010 by Shannon
I’ve been turning over one word in my head since Monday morning’s 20 week ultrasound: GIRL. GIRL. GIRL.
I was fully prepared to have another boy. In fact, I was kind of looking forward to it. My husband and his brother have lots of crazy childhood stories, and I thought it would be great to have two boys with a relationship like theirs. Maybe with fewer “I’m going to tie my little brother to this pole and leave him there” incidents, but nonetheless, I thought it would be cool.
Now, we’re entering an entirely new world. A world of magical fairies, princesses, pink and ruffles. A world where Dora the Explorer and Strawberry Shortcake rule the day.
I can’t believe it. A girl.
During the scan, the ultrasound tech put little arrows pointing toward the “evidence” before she even revealed her conclusion, but the second we saw those arrows, Michael and I knew. Still, I didn’t want to believe it until I heard her say the words. And as soon as she did, I burst into tears — tears of shock that she actually said the word GIRL. I guess I really was secretly hoping for one.
Soon I’ll be able to say that I have two kids — the thought of which I’m still getting used to — and I can’t believe I’ll be able to say I have a son AND a daughter! A daughter. Wow. Guess it’s time to dig out my old dolls! Squeeeeee!

Congrats, Shannon! I have one girl and another on the way. In my not so balanced opinion, they are the best!
However, princesses do certainly rule the day - even when you try to avoid them!
Like I tweeted, I’m so excited for you! I thought I wanted a boy until I was pregnant, then I was hoping for a girl. She is amazing… it’s so awesome to have a little version of you as a kid (well, at least half of you) walking around.
Sqeeeee!! Princesses!
Wow. A girl. I wonder what that’s like. You’ll have to let me come over and, like, brush her hair or something when I need a girl fix
CONGRATULATIONS!!!
Yahooo!!! I can’t wait to meet her. I have a special place in my heart for little girls, and I think you are going to LOVE having a sister for Kellan. Plus…he’s going to be her protector. How sweet!
Half way there….better get knitting!
Congrats, girls are precious, but they sure do develop an attitude as they get older. I guess that just means they’ll be tough and able to handle the world in which they live right? Or it may mean that I’m soon to have quite a few new gray hairs atop my head. *sigh*
Michael begged to be tied to that pole. What’s a big brother to do?
I am just so happy for you!!! I’m got my knitting plans made…now to get to work….
Congratulations Shannon! I’m the youngest girl of four with a brother that’s 15 months older than me. It was so awesome to have an older brother and not just because he picked up the protector role but because he taught me not to fear. We would play GI Joes for hours, they would help my Barbie dolls with the household chores and even teach Barbie how to have fun on the zip line we created above the ditch next to our house. We would dig 6ft holes in Mom’s garden and build treehouses and even a half pipe behind the pool together! Mom didn’t plant anything that year - FYI. My brother even saved enough money to help pay for his own go-cart. Our yard instantly became a go-cart track! There are so many wonderful memories my Brother and I share. I learned all about how ridiculous gender roles can be, and among other things I owe it to my Brother for teaching me how to relax and be daring. Your daughter is truly blessed!
Yay! You get one of each, you lucky mom. And most importantly, you get to dress her in those cute stripey tights!! I swear, that’s one of the few reasons I ever miss having a girl.
Shannon–congrats–I had no idea and it doesn’t show on TV! Yes–do the magical fairies, pink and ruffley thing while you can. Clare now has her own style–and that sweet girly-girl stuff is out the window. But she is unique and free spirited and I love her so much. Turns out I was never good with little girl hairstyles either. P.S she can beat the crap out of her big brother.
I’m so happy Kellan is going to get a little sister. I can’t wait to meet her. I too kinda wanted two boys, but I love my little girl and so does her big brother. As precious as she is though I am too dreading the pink ruffles and princesses. I loved looking at the ultrasound pictures. Just so happy for you sweetie.
CONGRATS!!! Girls are so much fun!! Thrilled for you.
My EXACT response!!! I had settled myself to the fact that I was having another boy. People even got the impression that I “wanted” another boy. In reality, I would have been happy with another boy. . .but you’re so right. . .I think I was secretly hoping for a girl.
One of each is a total blast. . .CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! Wishing you a happy and HEALTHY 20 weeks to go!
Shannon, I did not know you are pregnant! That is so exciting. Girls are SO MUCH FUN! I was a little nervous when we first found out we were having a girl because I thought for sure paybacks for my teen years were coming (and they probably still are), but our daughter is such a joy!
There are going to be a lot of babies around the same age as your daughter. Sage and Ainoa are both having boys.
Congratulations!
So so happy for you! I shed a tear reading this, as I remembered vividly the “it’s a girl!” moment that we had! Can’t wait to meet the little princess!!
