I’m back!

What do you get after you work part-time for six weeks, plan for and execute a three year old’s birthday party and lose one hour of sleep due to Daylight Saving Time? For me, at least, you get pretty tired.
During that six weeks of work, I had to take a little time off from blogging. And after I was done, I had to take a couple days off just to recover. But now, I’m back! And I have all kinds of plans and ideas brewing in my head that I can’t wait to share.
But first, may I brag a little bit? Okay then…don’t mind if I do. I pulled off two major successes for Kellan’s recent birthday party (and I have to thank my in-laws who entertained him for quite a while the day before so I could accomplish these major successes).
First, I totally redeemed myself after the Great Guitar Cake Debacle of 2009. For Kellan’s second birthday, I had big plans to make a rockin’ guitar for his rock star birthday party, but the cake did not release itself from the pan properly. Well, that’s a nice way to put it. The damn thing fell apart. So instead, I stenciled “Kellan U are 2″ (a play on his U2 themed party) on the one intact sheet cake with powdered sugar. Not exactly what I’d planned. But this year? I found a super simple tutorial for a monkey cake online, and I followed it to the letter. It turned out so great! The cake came out of the pan in one piece, which helped. From there, it was just a matter of following the decorating instructions. I cannot tell you how relieved I am that I didn’t screw up two birthday cakes in a row. Maybe that’s a silly thing to be proud of, but you know what — I don’t care. I made a Monkey Cake, and I am proud. There. I said it.
Second, I sewed a Superhero Cape! And I didn’t totally mess it up!!! The sewing is certainly not expert quality, but so far, I haven’t seen Kellan check the stitching. He has spent a lot of time “flying” around in it, so apparently the crooked stitches have not affected the cape’s magical powers. Once again, I followed a simple tutorial I found online. Thank you, Internet.
Okay, thanks for humoring me. In other news, we are expecting some serious spring-like temperatures this week and I CANNOT WAIT. I’ve got a few springy activities floating around in my head, which should be posted next week. Yay!

Wow, I am so impressed at your many talents! That monkey cake is ADORABLE and so is the cape. My son loves his Batman cape made by his grandma, who can actually sew. I’ll be interested to see if you can keep up these amazing displays of creativity once #2 arrives (said she, cackling evilly).
Holy cow that’s one fancy cool looking cake!!! Way to go! You should be proud of that! And what a sweet looking cape! Kellan is one lucky kid! I hope you’re getting caught up on your sleep and back in to your old routine!
All I can say is WOW! Both the cake and cape turned out amazing
