I am thankful
November 24, 2009 by Shannon
Thanksgiving has never been my favorite holiday. Not that there’s anything wrong with it — I just don’t really get excited for Thanksgiving. Maybe because the whole day is centered around a big, roasted bird. (Now if the main course were mashed potatoes, that would be a different story.)
But over the past couple of years, Thanksgiving has taken on a new significance to me, all because of my little boy. During Kellan’s first year, I took a vacation day on Thanksgiving (news people rarely, if ever, get automatic days off during holidays) so I could be around for his first Thanksgiving. I still remember his little baby face, covered in pumpkin. Last year, I had to work the holiday. I’d become quite used to working on Turkey Day, but I couldn’t help but feel a little sad that the only Thanksgiving memory I would have with my little boy that year was a brief phone conversation while I sat at my desk in the newsroom. This year, no work conflicts. I will get to spend the entire day — and entire extended weekend — with my family.
I have so much to be thankful for. An amazing and supportive husband, a bright and inquisitive son and good friends and family. These are the things that matter, and I am grateful that I now have more time to devote to the people I love.
Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family!
