How to make a no-sew lavender laundry sachet

December 17, 2009 by Shannon

sachet2I once bought a “lavender laundry sachet” at a street market for about 12 bucks. This year, I thought I would make some to give away as Christmas gifts, for just a fraction of the price.

What is a lavender laundry sachet, you ask? Well, much like a fabric softener sheet, it’s something you throw in the dryer with sheets or towels to give them the subtle fragrance of relaxing lavender.

I wanted to stitch the sachets myself this year. But I realized that I don’t have that kind of time, and I almost DEFINITELY do not have that kind of patience. (I think I used all of it up while harvesting the dried lavender buds from the stem. I’m using the lavender I cut out of my garden last fall. It’s not a tough job, but it takes a while.) So I went the no-sew route instead.

sachet1What you’ll need:

  • 3-4 knee high stockings, preferably in black or gray
  • Approximately 2 cups of dried lavender buds
  • Tall glass
  • 1 tablespoon measuring spoon
  • Quart-sized, zip-top freezer bags (such as Ziploc)
  1. Stretch one of the stockings over the rim of the glass and push the empty stocking inside.
  2. Fill the stocking with approximately 8 rounded tablespoons of lavender.
  3. Gently pull the stocking out of the glass. It should be about halfway full of lavender.
  4. Twist the empty end of the stocking where the wad (for lack of a better term) of lavender ends, then twist the remaining empty stocking back over the wad.
  5. Knot the end of the stocking and slip the sachet into a freezer bag.

sachet3Now you’ll want to include a note with the sachet, to explain to the gift recipient just what it is they’re holding in their hand. I’m using something along these lines (and feel free to cut and paste this onto your own note):

Lavender Laundry Sachet

Toss in the dryer with sheets or towels to give your linens a relaxing lavender scent. Squeeze gently before use and return to bag after the laundry load is complete. Can be used in 20-30 dryer cycles.

Great idea to use the knee high stockings instead of sewing little bags. My plans to get to the sewing maching this holiday season fell a little short as well.

Cool idea! I need one for the kids clothes, perhaps that would slow them down a little. :)
