Home hair color success!
July 22, 2009 by Shannon
I did it! I colored my hair at home and it did not turn purple. It did not fall out. At least not yet.
Actually, it was a pretty painless process! I just had to squirt a tube of stuff into a bottle, then shake, squirt, wait and rinse. And condition. And rinse again. And then dry my hair so I could see the new color.
Here’s my only complaint though: the instructions need to SPELL THINGS OUT for people like me who get a little panicky doing things like this. I got so absorbed in mixing the color right and timing everything that I forgot basics. Like, applying the hair dye while looking in the mirror…smearing my hairline with conditioner to avoid dying my scalp…having a TOWEL at the ready. Yeah, I took a very scatterbrained approach to the whole process.
But I think the end result is pretty okay! It is certainly a little darker than I would have liked, but I’m sure it will fade a bit.
Thanks to everyone who offered advice and support!!! Tell me what you think of the end result!
Be sure to watch Momcast 9: Hair I Go! to see the process (and panic), from start to finish!

Looks great! And it will fade out a bit. Next time, put the color on the gray roots first (your part and around the edges) and let it sit for about 15 minutes. Then do the rest of your hair. You won’t need to leave it on the previously-dyed portion as long as the instructions state. You also might choose a shade lighter since your hair absorbed quite a bit and turned out darker. Shannon, you are always so beautiful no matter what your hair is doing! Love ya!!
It looks fantastic - way to go!
You look fabulous! Nice work!
It looks as good as “salon quality” from your pic!! Nice Job!
Is this lathering at all?
I’m telling you — those instructions were wrong! There was no way I could “work up a lather” as directed.
Someone must have been watching Kellan or this would have had a different outcome! Hahaha! that was great! I did notice that your hair looked beautiful the other day!
