Drink your bananas!

July 24, 2009 by Shannon

Simple Banana SmoothieWhen it comes to beverages, I generally stick to water, coffee and wine. But sometimes a mommy just needs a bit of cool, delicious refreshment. And for that matter, so does a kid.

This recipe is sweet and simple — just four ingredients and a blender. It’s the perfect thing when kids want to help in the kitchen, because it is nearly impossible to screw up. Kellan loves peeling the bananas, dumping in all the ingredients and pushing the liquify button. He feels like he “made” something, and he gets to enjoy the delicious results. And that, of course, is like winning the lottery to a toddler.

Simple Banana Smoothie

  • 2 ripe bananas
  • 1 cup ice cubes
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

  1. Dump ice cubes into blender.
  2. Peel bananas and drop on top of ice cubes.
  3. Pour in milk and vanilla.
  4. Blend and serve.

Prepare to blend! For extra points on presentation, put the glasses in the freezer for a few minutes before filling. They’ll look frosty and cool! (Of course, glasses are not recommended for kids who still have a tendency to drop/throw cups, as mine does. It’s plastic only for my kid.)

This recipe definitely stands up to my new policy of making an extra effort to enjoy the summer. Right now, I’m all about things that are cool, refreshing and most of all….simple. Ahhhhh.

YUMMY! I so have to try this for my boys. I’m sure even I can’t get this wrong! Looks simple enough, and super healthy, too! Thanks!

We made homemade popsicles with fruit and yogurt this past week, thanks to Martha Stewart. We had a great time making them. However, it’s hit and miss with bananas with my crew. We also made homemade sponge-ball thingies with sponges. They had a great time with those, too. I love your shake recipe. We’ll give it a try, using other fruit!

Yummy! Another option is to swap out the ice cubes with frozen raspberries. That’s one of my favorite smoothies! I also use honey sometimes as a sweetner!

How can people go through lives not being healthy, it’s beyond me. Thanks for taking the time to help us all on our healthier missions.
