As a local TV news anchor, I’ve always been protective of my personal life. I always wanted to connect with the viewers and them to connect with me, but I never wanted to reveal too much too publicly. In fact, once I got married I kept my maiden name as my on-air name, mostly so I could keep one more shield between myself and any crazies out there who might try to track me down. I was SO careful.

What do you get after you work part-time for six weeks, plan for and execute a three year old’s birthday party and lose one hour of sleep due to Daylight Saving Time? For me, at least, you get pretty tired.

When it became clear that I was going to leave my dream job as a television news anchor and producer, I fell apart. I’m not even joking. I opened a bottle of wine at 4 in the afternoon, and I drank the whole thing. I cried. I laughed like a maniac. I cried some more. A LOT more. My boss was nice enough to give me a couple of days off to collect myself. (And boy, did I need them.)

WAHM. Have you ever said the word out loud? Go ahead! Try it. Sounds weird, right? It’s even weirder to think of it as your job title. But that’s me — Shannon Paterson, Work-At-Home Mom. For some reason, I’m tempted to give the word a little Emeril Lagasse flair when I say it. Shannon Paterson, WAHM! (I guess his signature saying is BAM, which would make WAHM sound more like WHAM, but you get the idea.)

It’s been a total blast to be back at work at my old job. I can’t say it enough. After all, it’s a job I really didn’t want to leave. And even though I am relieved and grateful that I took the plunge into stay-at-home mom life, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t miss the newsroom. I spent eight years of my life at that place, and 10 years in the news industry. How could I not miss it?

So much for grocery store greetings. Kellan has a whole new way to pass the time in grocery stores or drugstores. He makes me turn beet red from embarrassment.
