When it became clear that I was going to leave my dream job as a television news anchor and producer, I fell apart. I’m not even joking. I opened a bottle of wine at 4 in the afternoon, and I drank the whole thing. I cried. I laughed like a maniac. I cried some more. A LOT more. My boss was nice enough to give me a couple of days off to collect myself. (And boy, did I need them.)

But I also turned to something that had become an invaluable outlet for self expression — my personal blog.

WAHM. Have you ever said the word out loud? Go ahead! Try it. Sounds weird, right? It’s even weirder to think of it as your job title. But that’s me — Shannon Paterson, Work-At-Home Mom. For some reason, I’m tempted to give the word a little Emeril Lagasse flair when I say it. Shannon Paterson, WAHM! (I guess his signature saying is BAM, which would make WAHM sound more like WHAM, but you get the idea.)

It’s been a total blast to be back at work at my old job. I can’t say it enough. After all, it’s a job I really didn’t want to leave. And even though I am relieved and grateful that I took the plunge into stay-at-home mom life, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t miss the newsroom. I spent eight years of my life at that place, and 10 years in the news industry. How could I not miss it?

Now that I’m getting back to work for a while, I’m once again relying on my slow cooker. It’s my way of making sure Kellan and Michael eat somewhat decently while I’m away. Otherwise, left to their own devices, there’s a fair amount of restaurant take-out and macaroni & cheese that gets served at the dinner table.
