Big requests for Santa Claus

December 4, 2009 by Shannon

This Christmas is going to be so fun. Kellan really gets the concept of Santa this year, and this is the first year that he’s asking for specific gifts from the big man. He is so thrilled, which makes me feel giddy too!

DrumsBut there’s one leeeeetle issue. Kellan’s Christmas list. He’s not asking for a lot, but the two things he wants are real doozies, in my opinion:

  1. Drum set
  2. Big animals

I’m just going to be honest. Those are about the last two things on this earth that I want Santa to deliver. Okay, first of all? A drum set? Are you kidding me? One word: LOUD.

As for the big animals…you’re probably wondering what the heck that means. I was too, until Kellan explained a little bit. He wants large stuffed animals like the giraffe and cheetah at his pediatrician’s office. Those, of course, are not loud — which is great — but they are BIG. That poses two problems. One, where the heck am I going to keep big animals? Just another thing to shove into an overpacked closet I guess…. And two, cost. Last time I checked, those things were like $100-$200 apiece, right? Sigh. I hope Costco is stocking something large and furry this year.

But the drum set! HEAVEN HELP ME….MY BOY IS NOT EVEN THREE AND HE WANTS A DRUM SET. Santa, if you’re reading this, the number one thing on my wish list this year is a basement. Oh, and lots of soundproofing material. As much as you’ve got. And some earplugs would be nice too. Thanks.

I saw “big animals” at my costco, but I think that they were horses.

Big Animals. I. Can’t. Stop. Laughing.

OK — it would be cheating, but maybe you guys could decorate his room with some one dimensional big animals. I remember my pediatrician (back in the day) had (what I think were plywood) one dimensional cutouts of “big animals” (safari types) on the wall. This made you feel like you had animals all around you, but they were real space savers! And also maybe get him the book “Flat Stanley”. All the above would save room for a drum set.

But on second thought, perhaps stuffed big animals would provide decent sound insulation.

Love it! I say encourage the kid’s musical ambitions! One great way to help sound proof a room is with egg cartons on the walls. :) Could be a fun project, the two of you could paint them together before hanging them up! Also, I believe they make rubber pads to put on the drums to make them quieter.
    Keep the music alive, K!

I saw big animals at our local Costco. They even had giraffe’s. But I think they were even more expensive then the price you listed. Good luck is all I can say. Right now I am actually thankful my little one is too young to ask for anything.

You’re right, Tara! I just found out that the giraffes at Costco were $600. That is WAY too rich for my blood. But get this — the only one I saw there the other day was at the door, where the employees check your receipt on the way out. I asked the receipt checker if they had any more (before I even realized how expensive they were) and she said no, the one behind her JUST SOLD and had been marked down from $600 to $120!!!! This killed me because had I arrived at Costco half an hour earlier, like I’d intended, that discounted giraffe would likely have been under — or rather towering over — our tree this year.

Michael, however, still insists that it would have been a bad purchase because of its enormous size. In fact, he says he would have been mad if I bought it. So I guess it’s for the best.

Still, I’m kicking myself that I missed such a screamin’ deal by half an hour…

Rock on Kellan!!!! Earplugs are the perfect stocking stuffers! Good luck Shannon! I can’t wait to come by when we’re in town for the H-Bowl for my next concert!

All Pele has been asking for is a tea set. I think my set is the better of the two, can’t say I’d be too happy with a drum set either, at least not without installing a sound proof studio to go with it.
