Attack of the Killer Tantrum

July 8, 2009 by Shannon

Killer tantrum in the making?I know it’s coming. Any day now I could find myself the victim of a Killer Tantrum — one of those rare and dreaded moments where a child completely loses it in public and the parent is completely helpless to do anything but grab the child and leave the area ASAP.

How do I know I’m about to become a victim? We’ve witnessed several house-shaking tantrums at home over the past couple of days. The kind where nothing — not time outs, not faked phone calls to grandparents, not even the promise of SWIMMING! — can stop the tantrum train. I’m almost positive Kellan is planning to take his act on the road. The grocery store perhaps? A restaurant? Or, heaven forbid, the library? All of those locations are viable options.

So I’m bracing myself. I’ve got the usual distractions in the bag-of-tricks otherwise known as my purse — crayons, coloring book, snacks — but will that be enough? Will I find myself leaving a full cart of groceries behind while running out the door with a shrieking kid?

Who knows. But I do know this: The Attack of the Killer Tantrum could make a debut at any moment.

Such a sweet little face. Looks like you’ll need to stay home and ride it out!

Ugh — I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you that Kellan develops stage fright in public! Nina threw an on-the-floor-screaming-kicking-crying tantrum at the library. I had to abandon a pile of books, grab her around the waist and haul her out to the car. And she ended with the tantrum equivalent of a cherry on top: Screamed like I was abducting her as I loaded her into the car seat. Yep. Good times.

I lucked out. I didn’t suffer through too many tantrums with you guys in public. I think you (especially) were too shy to do it in public. You saved it for home. I recall more tantrums when you were a teenager than when you were 2 or 3.

How could that cutie pie throw such fits? Good luck with this phase as I’ve got my fingers crossed that he’ll grow out of it soon! It was so fun to see you guys last weekend and watch my favorite musician perform! Can’t wait until he takes his show on the road and heads to Seattle! Hugs!
