All underwear, all the time
October 13, 2009 by Shannon

It is official. My little boy is no baby. How do I know this? I have seen him pee while standing.
His first standing pee attempt — along the side of the highway during our weekend road trip — was unsuccessful. (We ended up having to bust out the travel potty.) But two days later, out in the woods with no travel potty at the ready, he did it. The stream was long and steady, and a sure indication that diapers are a thing of the past.
This potty training thing sorta came about by accident. We didn’t really mean to start…it just kinda happened. A week ago Sunday — after Kellan pooped so massively that some chunks came out of his diaper and collected in the foot of his footed pajamas — we thought, what do we have to lose? So we talked him into wearing a pair of underpants, hung around the house all day, and hoped for the best. And it was an AWESOME day. He peed in the potty repeatedly, and we were thrilled. We hadn’t even meant to start potty training that day, and it seemed we were suddenly off to a great start.
And then — he pooped in his underpants. I quickly learned that poop in underpants is 1,000% more horrifying than it is in a diaper. But we knew there was no going back. If there was one thing we’d learned in a year of unsuccessful training attempts, it was that potty training and NOT losing the diapers was not working. So we fully committed to the idea of all underwear, all the time.
The next day, Kellan and I spent all day at the house. Not one accident! Success! The day after that — a playdate and an accident. The day after that — dry! All day! And so it goes. Things aren’t perfect (Kellan has discovered a whole new way to postpone bedtime by declaring he has to poop or pee a couple times) but we’re definitely on the path to a diaper-free life. A week ago, I don’t think we could imagine having a kid who would rather do his business in a toilet than in a diaper. This is a HUGE development.
So that giant box of diapers I bought last week at Costco? Customer service desk, I’m headed your way, receipt in hand. I think I’ll be picking up a box of Pull-Ups for nighttime use, but other than that – we’re going all underwear, all the time.

Wow! What a fabulous milestone Kellan has reached. Congratulations to you both.
WOOHOO!!! Yay for you! CONGRATS!!!
Yay! I wish you strength going forward. Potty training my son didn’t fully “take” for 8 mos. Even now, we have plenty of accidents. As for the standing/outdoor pee, get this: my son’s preschool teacher cornered me at pick-up and said that M., uh, “relieved himself” on the fence during gym class. Could I “”reinforce” proper potty habits at home, please? Ha! Boys.
Yeah! That is very big news for your house!
What about all of his phone calls to me “bragging”
about using the potty? Priceless.
Congrats, it’s a great feeling, but I know what you mean about a new bedtime stalling technique. There are times that Pele will glue her bum to the potty insisting for up to half an hour that she must pee before she goes to bed. Still, diapers are expensive and it’s great to put them behind you. Get it….diapers…..behind….. I need a vacation.
