A mother is…
May 4, 2010 by Shannon
Mother’s Day is THIS SUNDAY! My husband just reminded me of that fact Sunday night. Yikes. I’ve got a little shopping to do for Kellan’s doting grandmas. What do I want for Mother’s Day? Hmm. I think I’d like to go shopping for myself, by myself! Doesn’t that sound heavenly?
Speaking of Mother’s Day, the lovely Loukia of Lou Lou’s Views is hosting a writing contest on what a mother is. Below is my entry for the contest, and be sure to visit her blog if you’d like to enter too!
A mother is…willing to sleep on the floor beside the baby’s crib for as long as it takes him to get better.
A mother is…adept at pretending three squiggly lines and a half circle look EXACTLY like Daddy and the family dog. Of course! Don’t you see it?
A mother is…extremely calm and collected while dealing with a vomiting child and the “aftermath”, even though the smell – OMG, the smell – makes her entire stomach crawl into the back of her throat.
A mother is…a child’s hero when she decides to order pizza for dinner and play hide-and-seek, instead of saying “Not now, honey. I’ve got to make dinner.”
A mother is…always prepared with a bag full of snacks, crayons, coloring books, small toys, tissues, wet wipes, bandages for boo-boos, and the occasional child’s hat or extra pair of pants. And this is long after the diaper bag days.
A mother is…okay with having to wipe a nose with her own T-shirt when she discovers both the wet wipe stash and the tissue stash are completely gone.
A mother is…the one who runs to the car to privately burst into tears after dropping off her child at preschool for the first time, even though the child is already happily lost in a game of make-believe with all his new “friends.”
A mother is…extremely underpaid and undervalued.
A mother is…paid instead in bear hugs and sloppy kisses. And she wouldn’t have it any other way.
