I’m a member of the Forthose Sisterhood

I'm a member of the Forthose Sisterhood

I never knew that joining a sorority in college meant that I could assume the description of “forthose” later in life.

A few months ago, I joined my sorority’s Facebook group and found this description on the home page…

What you doin’?

What you doin'?

My son is a talker. (Gee, I wonder where he gets that from? Is that why my best friend’s mom used to call me “Gabby” as a kid?)

I love that he’s a chatty, inquisitive boy. We have long conversations on everything from why people go to the hospital to where the nice librarian goes when she’s not at work, and every single day he says something that cracks me up. But there is one particular phrase Kellan is in love with, and it’s DRIVING ME CRAZY!!

A trip down ice cream memory lane

A trip down ice cream memory lane

If there’s one thing I’ve learned as a parent, it’s that you can’t turn back the clock. But over the weekend, I got pretty close.

I was feeling wistful during our quick weekend getaway because Kellan slept in a “big boy” twin bed for the first time ever. He sleeps in a converted crib at home, so to me, it’s not really a real bed. But a twin? I almost wanted to cry, looking at him nestled in there like a true big kid.

Why playgroups could put me in therapy

June 26, 2009 by Shannon  |  6 Comments

I have an admission to make. Mommy groups make me nervous.

Don’t get me wrong. Kellan and I have had several awesome playdates since I left my job and we’ve had a great time at every single one of them. But all of them have been pretty basic, with just one mom and her kid(s). There’s something about a big group of mothers and kids that amps up my anxiety level.

Perhaps my problem stems from the very first playgroup I ever attended just a few weeks ago in Seattle…

Vet Adventure 2009

Vet Adventure 2009

It’s never easy to take our Bernese Mountain Dog/Border Collie mix anywhere other than our backyard. Enzo is 85 pounds of lean, mean muscle mass and he’s been known to pull a grown man right off his feet. I’m pretty sure he also has secret nuclear rocket launchers in his legs. He goes from zero to 60 in about two seconds, especially if there’s another dog around.

Grilled Pizza: My favorite summer meal

Grilled Pizza: My favorite summer meal

We’re a few weeks in to what is shaping up to become a new family tradition — Friday night pizza! There’s something oddly theraputic about making pizza dough from scratch. And now that it’s grilling season, I’m all about cooking it up over an open flame.

Grilled pizza requires a little more attention than your average grilled meal. But the results are worth it.

Footagea: Is it Italian? A lost continent? A contagious virus?

Footagea: Is it Italian? A lost continent? A contagious virus?

I don’t know why I read those paid advertisements in magazines. But sometimes, if I’m lucky, I am rewarded with a fabulous new typo discovery.

DIY child’s art smock

DIY child's art smock

Have an old long-sleeved T-shirt lying around? In two minutes’ time you can turn it into a custom fit child’s art smock, and save yourself plenty of laundry headaches.

Any T-shirt would probably work for this project, but I like using a long sleeved one because the arms can be used as ties to keep the smock well-fitted to the kid.

Starts with a “P,” rhymes with Venus

June 19, 2009 by Shannon  |  4 Comments

I hadn’t really made up my mind on how I wanted to handle the issue of referencing “private parts” with my son. Turns out, my husband made the decision for me.

You don’t have to be a vegetarian to love this quick and easy meal. It is flavorful, satisfying and goes perfectly with a toasted whole wheat pita.

I have a living room again!

I have a living room again!

While I was working, some things around our house just didn’t get done. As in, didn’t get done for MONTHS. We certainly didn’t live in squalor or anything — we managed to handle the basics. But I’ll be honest. I pretended my living room didn’t exist.
